Film

BFI London Film Festival 2021: Petite Mamon

Director
Céline Sciamma
Certificate
TBA
Running Time
72 mins

Following the death of her grandmother, eight-year-old Nelly (Joséphine Sanz) helps to clear her mother’s childhood home. While walking in the woods, she meets a little girl who seems identical to herself (Gabrielle Sanz) and they swiftly form a bond.

Try to avoid any spoilers about Céline Sciamma‘s small but perfectly formed, magical follow-up to Portrait of a Lady on Fire and you’ll enjoy its surprises all the more. That said, the title itself is a bit of a giveaway. The Guardian described it as a “beautiful fairytale reverie . . .  occasioned by the dual mysteries of memory and the future: simple, elegant and very moving.”
