Oscar winner Pete Docter, who wrote and directed two of Pixar’s finest animations, Up and Inside Out, returns to the metaphysical territory of the latter with the story of schoolteacher and aspiring jazz musician Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx), who gets his break at the Half Note Club.
Alas, a mishap results in Joe’s soul being separated from his body. He promptly winds up in a celestial academy where souls are prepared to be unleashed on Earth. Now he must race against time to make himself corporeal again before he’s usurped by his jazzy nemesis Paul (Daveed Diggs). Along the way, he encounters 22 (Tina Fey), a grumpy trainee soul trapped in The Great Before. Fact fans may wish to note that this is the first Pixar flick to centre on an African-American protagonist. The voice cast also includes Angela Bassett as jazz singer Dorothea Williams and Richard Ayoade as a ‘soul counsellor’.
The Watershed’s preview screenings on October 11 are part of the BFI London Film Festival… in Bristol season.
