Given Pixar’s reputation as animation innovators, it’s a tad depressing to find that their upcoming slate consists entirely of sequels. Yep, Toy Story 4 will be with us next summer, but first here’s Brad Bird‘s follow-up to his The Incredibles. Caveats aside, that 2004 film was one of Pixar’s best (Variety rates it second only to the original Toy Story in the Pixar pantheon, which is pushing it a bit).
You’ll recall that this clever mix of adult satire and kid-friendly entertainment had a family of superheroes forced to assume ordinary identities in suburbia as a consequence of a bunch of greedy lawsuits, only to find themselves drawn back into crime-fighting. The sequel picks up where the first film left off with that teaser about the introduction of a new supervillian – The Underminer. Having ventured into live action with Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and the flop Tomorrowland, this is Bird’s first animated feature since the great Ratatouille.
