The first Home Alone became such a huge hit that this 1992 sequel was inevitable, writer/producer John Hughes and director Chris Columbus playing it safe with what is effectively a remake. This time, mum and dad jet off to Florida for a yuletide family break, except that – guess what? – little Macaulay Culkin gets left behind and accidentally winds up in New York, where his dad’s credit card and his own innate cunning enable him to book into a snazzy hotel and eat loads of ice cream. Meanwhile, bumbling burglars Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern just happen to have escaped from prison.
Like the original, it takes ages to creak into action and the impact of the knockabout comedy is dulled by crass over-emphasis. True, there’s a game array of supporting performances, from Tim Curry as the outwitted hotel manager to Brenda Fricker as a bird-loving bag lady. But if you loved/hated the first one, you’ll love/hate this too. Warning: contains inexplicable Donald Trump cameo.
