Metropolitan Opera Live: Wozzeck

Certificate
12A
Running Time
102 mins

Expanded from the unfinished drama Woyzeck, Austrian composer Alban Berg‘s first opera proved both a sensation and a scandal at its premiere back in 1925. Set in a German-speaking town prior to WWI, it deals with issues of militarism, sadism and the impending doom of the Great War.

It’s brought to the screen for the first time by South African artist William Kentridge, who triumphed with his production of Lulu back in 2015. Met Music Director Yannick Nezet-Seguin conducts, with baritone Peter Mattei making his role debut as the title character. Soprano Elza van den Heever is Wozzeck’s unfaithful mate.
