The Receptionist

Director
Jenny Lu
Certificate
18
Running Time
102 mins

The financial crisis of 2008 has started to bite as Taiwanese graduate Tina (Teresa Daley) struggles to find work in London. Eventually, she winds up as the receptionist at a seedy illegal massage parlour run by the formidable Lily (Sophie Gopsill). Here, she gets to know some of the women who’ve become sex workers for very different reasons.

London-based Taiwanese director Jenny Lu‘s unflinching directorial debut isn’t without its cliches – watch out for the tart with a heart – but its authenticity derives from being based on real-life experiences. There’s also a strong supporting performance by Chen Shiang-chyi, who’s appeared in most of Tsai Ming-liang’s films
