Based on a true story, this art world satire tells the story of Syrian refugee Sam Ali (Yahya Mahayni) who agrees to be tattooed by an arrogant modern artist in order to reunite with his girlfriend in Belgium. By doing so, he becomes a ‘conceptual art object’ rather than a human being and so can be legally transported to Brussels.
It’s a promising idea, but this Oscar-nominated art world satire has been poorly received, with The Guardian calling it “a muddled caper of a movie that doesn’t know what it wants to say” while The Times damned it as “a clunky and juvenile critique of the art world”.
