The Elephant Man

Director
David Lynch
Certificate
12A
Running Time
123 mins

“He’s packing his trunk…” Yes, the story of the elephant man might have provided the otherwise justly forgotten The Tall Guy with its funniest moment, but it also inspired the film that’s hailed by those who swiftly tired of David Lynch’s forays into opaque weirdness as his finest film. Superbly photographed in monochrome by the great Freddie Francis, this poignant drama boasts a magnficent performance from John Hurt as the horribly disfigured John Merrick. Amusing trivia note: the film was executive produced by an uncredited Mel Brooks. Why uncredited? He didn’t want people to come along expecting a comedy.

It’s back on screen in 4K restored form in the Everyman’s late night classics season.
