Victorian scientist James Glaisher (Eddie Redmayne) and daredevil pilot Amelia Wren (Felicity Jones) leap aboard their hot air balloon in 1862 bent on legitimising the science of meteorology by ascending higher than any human being has hitherto managed.
TV (Peaky Blinders, etc) and The Woman in Black: Angel of Death director Tom Harper reunites the Theory of Everything duo of Redmayne and Jones as the chalk’n’cheese showgirl and boffin duo for this Amazon-backed period adventure romp. Inconvenient history records that the real ascent on which the story is based had two male balloonists (Glaisher is a real historical figure; Wren is a made-up character), but it was presumably considered that a brace of whiskery gents hoisted aloft by a gasbag wouldn’t, erm, fly in the Time’s Up era.
