A gay dementia drama might be a tough sell, but those willing to take the plunge should be reassured by the warm reviews for actor-turned-director Henry Macqueen‘s follow-up to Hinterland.

Stanley Tucci and Colin Firth are longstanding upmarket couple Tusker and Sam – a novelist and concert pianist respectively – who are suitably devastated when Tusker is diagnosed with early-onset dementia. So the bickering sixtysomething duo hit the road for a trundle round the Lake District in their cramped camper van. Supernova proceeds pretty much as you might expect, which is rather inevitable given the subject matter. But Tucci and Firth elevate it by delivering all the dense, somewhat stagey dialogue like the old pros they are.
