Summer 1993

Director
Carla Simón
Certificate
12A
Running Time
98 mins

It is, as the title informs us, the summer of 1993. Following the death of her parents, six-year-old Frida (Laia Artigas) has been sent to live with her mother’s brother, Esteve (David Verdaguer), and his family. Not only must this city girl adjust in the outwardly idyllic countryside, but she must also find her place in this new family dynamic.

Assisted by a terrific performance by young Laia Artigas, Catalan first-time director Carla Simón‘s drama is suffused with authenticity as a result of being largely autobiographical. Indeed, it was shot in the same area where she herself was sent at the age of six.
