Wang Xiaoshuai, director of the award-winning Bejing Bicycle, returns with an epic three hour family drama exploring the human impact of the Chinese Communist Party’s one-child policy.
This ambitiously constructed, time-hopping story begins with a mystery. At first, we see young Xingxing drowning in a reservoir in 1986. Then in the 1990s, we find his parents Yaoyun (Wang Jingchun) Liyun (Yong Mei) struggling to deal with the troublesome teenage Xingxing. So did he somehow survive? All is revealed in the ensuing, decades-spanning slowburner.
