Elisabeth Moss stars in this agreeably sour biopic of influential horror/mystery novelist Shirley Jackson, writer of the enduringly popular, much-adapted The Haunting of Hill House. It’s directed by Josephine Decker, who’s best known here for the experimental drama Madeline’s Madeline.

Jackson’s son wasn’t best pleased by the depiction of his parents’ tempestuous marriage, which reaches a crisis point with the arrival of a pair of young newlyweds. But the film went down a treat at Sundance (where it won a Special Jury Award) and has earned approving comparisons with Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
