As Tokyo burns in the wake of air strikes in the closing months of the Pacific War, nursery teacher Kaede and her colleagues persuade parents to let them evacuate their children to safety. Leading their 53 infant students out of the devastated city, they settle in an abandoned temple. Playing music on an organ they brought with them offers solace as the threat of bombing continues to loom.
This true story from WWII launches the annual Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme whose theme this year is happiness.
