Colombia’s award-winning official entry for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards was described memorably by The Guardian as “Apocalypse Now on shrooms”.
The eponymous Monos are a bunch of immature teen guerillas operating in a mountain region somewhere in Latin America, where they have little to do other than fire their guns and oversee a cow and an American hostage. As they await instructions, matters take a turn for the Lord of the Flies.
It’s back on screen in the Watershed’s Film Sc♀res season celebrating female composers, which is in turn part of Filmic 20. The distinctive Monos score is by UK composer Mica Levi.
