Oscar-winning Shame and 12 Years a Slave director Steve McQueen‘s superb courtroom drama brings to life the notorious Mangrove Nine case of 1970 – a pivotal moment in modern black British history. The activists, whose ranks included Altheia Jones-LeCointe (Letitia Wright) and Darcus Howe (Malachi Kirby), were wrongfully arrested for incitement to riot after gathering at the Mangrove restaurant in Notting Hill. Their ensuing 55-day trial takes place against the backdrop of police racism and brutality.

This BFI London Film Festival… in Bristol screening of the first film in McQueen’s Small Axe anthology series for the BBC is completely free. Go here for more information and to book.
