No, not that Manchester. This one’s in Massachusetts, to which grumpy, troubled Boston handyman Casey Affleck returns after the death of his beloved brother. Naturally, he’s surprised to find himself appointed guardian of his 16-year-old nephew. But going home also means confronting his past and the tragic events that separated him from his wife, Michelle Williams.

Unprolific You Can Count On Me director Kenneth Lonergan‘s third film in 16 years received pretty much universal critical acclaim in the US thanks to its rare truthful, uncontrived and unmanipulative approach to grief. Affleck also bagged a well-deserved Academy Award for Best Actor. Go here for our full review.

The Watershed’s screening is part of the Film Sc♀res season celebrating female composers, which is in turn part of Filmic 20. Manchester by the Sea‘s score is by Canadian composer and multi-instrumentalist Lesley Barber.
