Released in China this time last year, Bi Gan‘s noir-ish drama attracted particular attention for its gravity-defying unbroken 59 minute 3D concluding shot. Described by one critic as the love child of Wong Kar-Wai and Andrei Tarkovsky, it follows a chap on a quest in search of a girl from his past, encountering a bunch of bizarre characters along the way.
If you’re not deterred by such descriptions as ‘languorous’ ‘hypnotic’ and ‘plotless’, this is the dreamily immersive arthouse film for you. Everyone else should be warned, however, that back home in China the hashtag ‘Can’t understand Long Day’s Journey Into Night’ trended on social media.
