One of those romantic melodramas in which chance events connect strangers across generations and continents.
It’s directed by Dan Fogelman, who wrote Crazy Stupid Love, with an ensemble cast that includes Oscar Isaac, Olivia Wilde, Annette Bening, Mandy Patinkin, Olivia Cooke and Antonio Banderas. The PR blurb insists the film “celebrates the human condition and all of its complications with humour, poignancy and love”. Critics overwhelmingly begged to differ (it currently holds a 13% rating on Rotten Tomatoes). The New York Times’s reivewer couldn’t resist the urge to chuckle at this “inadvertently hilarious” film, filled with a “parental slaughter … (where) mothers and fathers are hit by buses, perish in car accidents, commit suicide and succumb to cancer.”
