It’s Captain Fantastic without the laughs as PTSD afflicted military veteran Ben Foster raises his teenage daughter Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie ‘off-grid’ in the wilderness of a nature reserve in Portland, Oregon. Then they’re discovered by the authorities and find themselves forced to participate in conventional society, which opens up a gulf between them.

Winter’s Bone director Debra Granik returns to the backwoods for this equally empathetic adaptation of Peter Rock’s 2009 novel My Abandonment, which was premiered to considerable acclaim at this year’s Sundance Festival.
