After Local Hero and Gregory’s Girl, Bill Forsyth decamped to Hollywood. This proved to be something of a bruising experience, but he got off to a flying start with this overlooked drama from 1987.

Adapted from the 1980 novel by Marilynne Robinson, this superbly crafted character study casts Sara Walker and Andrea Burchill as orphaned siblings who are placed in the care of their dippy, eccentric aunt Christine Lahti.
