Kasi Lemmons, of Eve’s Bayou fame, directs a biopic of 19th century slave-turned-abolitionist and political activist Harriet Tubman (played by British actress and singer Cynthia Erivo).
US reviews were decidedly mixed. Erivo’s performance was widely praised but the film itself has been described as dull and, in the words of Variety, “more dutiful than inspired”.
