French Exit

Running Time

Having blown her vast inheritance from dead hubby Franklin, down on her luck 60-year-old Manhattan socialite Frances Price (Michelle Pfeiffer) decides to live out her twilight days anonymously in a borrowed apartment in Paris. Joining her on this adventure are her directionless son Malcolm (Lucas Hedges) and a cat who’s named Small Frank on account of being the reincanation of Franklin.

Adapted by Patrick deWitt from his novel of the same title, this failed slice of putative Oscar bait is presumably a treat for the limited audience who enjoy the trials and tribulations of the very rich. Michelle Pfeiffer’s performance was widely praised. Indeed, she received a Golden Globe nomination. But critics were mostly unimpressed by everything else. “A defiantly unbelievable and drably directed heap of quirk that’s as overstuffed as it is underpowered, a head-scratching failure for all involved,” was The Guardian’s verdict.
