In 1917, a 10-year-old shepherd and her cousins claim to have seen apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Fátima, Portugal, in what becomes known as the ‘Miracle of the Sun’. The BVM’s message is that only prayer and suffering will bring an end to WWI. Pilgrims promptly flock to the site, despite the objections of both the Catholic Church and the secular govenment, who try to persuade the nippers to recant.

This latest god-bothery drama peddles all the usual ‘faith vs science’ guff (guess which wins) and even gives believers a cheapo CGI glimpse of Hell. Which is nice. Reviews have been mixed, as is usual with faith drams. “While the film may speak to viewers with a spiritual investment in these events, it does little to bring them alive for others,” was the verdict of the New York Times.
