South West Silents and Cinema Rediscovered present this brand new restoration of this great Italian silent epic with live piano accompaniment by John Sweeney. Set during the conflicts between Rome and Carthage in the third century BC, the film tells the story of Cabiria (Lidia Quaranta), a Roman girl who is separated from her parents during the Second Punic War. Helped along the way by two heroes of the war, Fulvio (Umberto Mozzato) and Maciste (Bartolomeo Pagano), her odyssey takes in such grand set pieces as the eruption of Mount Etna, sea battles with Mediterranean pirates, human sacrifices and Hannibal crossing the Alps.
The Watershed’s screening will be introduced by Dr Carol O’Sullivan, Associate Professor in Translation Studies, Bristol University and James Harrison, co-director of South West Silents.
