It’s WWII and a footy-mad Nazi officer organises an exhibition match between the Master Race and a bunch of Allied PoWs with the intention of demonstrating Aryan superiority. But our heroes have another plan, which is rather given away by the title.
A poor cousin of The Great Escape, this daft 1981 flick sees the likes of Michael Caine and Sylvester Stallone cast alongside a whole bunch of real footballers, including Pele, Bobby Moore, Osvaldo Ardiles and most of the Ipswich team. The footy action was also choreographed by Pele. Escape to Victory was described by one critic as “a rousing romp, made all the more enjoyable by the shocking performances of the players”. One of them was Russell Osman, who bagged several international caps and managed both Bristol City and Bristol Rovers during his off-pitch career. He’ll be present at this Bristol Film Festival ‘On Location’ screening in Clifton College’s Pre School Hall to talk about the making of the film, show off his memorabilia and take questions from the audience.
