Balloon

Director
Pema Tseden
Certificate
12A
Running Time
102 mins

It’s the early 1980s and randy Tibetan farmer Dargye (Jinpa) has already sired three children. If he manages to knock up the missus, Drolkar (Sonam Wangmo), again he’ll be fined so heavily that his farm will go under. The couple’s two boisterous sons (Druklha Dorje, Palden Nyima), meanwhile, have discovered their secret stash of condoms, which they mistake for balloons . . .

Tibetan director Pema Tseden‘s multiple award-winning drama was hailed by Variety as being “both a gorgeously intimate family drama and an idiosyncratic artistic statement flecked with humor and sorrow, but alive always to the co-existence of the banal with the spiritual.”
