Oscar-nominated Willem Dafoe takes on the role previously played by the likes of Kirk Douglas and Tim Roth in this Van Gogh biopic from Basquiat, Before Night Falls and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly director Julian Schnabel.
Overlapping somewhat with Altman’s Vincent & Theo, it’s an immersive portrait of the great post-impressionist’s creative process and troubled final years drawing on letters, documentary fact, hearsay and pure invention. Rupert Friend is cast as Vincent’s brother Theo, while Oscar Isaac pops up as Paul Gaugin.
