A slight, TV movie-ish arthouse drama dealing with the aftermath of a terrorist attack. The titular Amanda is a seven-year-old nipper whose mother is killed during a massacre in a Parisian park. The kid’s callow uncle now has to grow up quickly as he assumes guardianship of the orphaned girl.
French writer-director Mikhaël Hers has said that his intention was to explore the human stories behind terrorist attacks, so if you’re hoping for political context or any analysis of Islamism you’re likely to come away disappointed. Instead, there’s lots of very French bohemian guff, shot verite style and accompanied by a sugary score. “All that is lacking here is ripe cheese and accordion music,” remarked the Hollywood Reporter‘s reviewer, who branded the film “pleasantly banal”.
