In a story inspired by the life of Miles Davis, Sammy Davis Jr. plays a respected but volatile jazz trumpeter who hits a downward spiral sparked by racism and personal tragedy. This 1966 drama showcases the cream of contemporary African-American acting and musical talent, including Louis Armstrong, Ossie Davis and Cicely Tyson (in her screen debut). Director Leo Penn is the father of Chris and Sean.

Cinema Rediscovered presents the UK premeire of this restored version, in partnership with the Bristol International Jazz and Blues Festival. The screening will be introduced by writer/curator Karen Alexander.
