Twinkly-eyed Tom Hanks does the heart-warming thing again in this cosy, soft-hearted, wholly predictable true-life fable that’s being marketed as an antidote to cynicism.
He plays folksy US TV phenomenon Fred Rogers, who’s always ready with a homely homily. Matthew Rhys is the sour, embittered and troubled Esquire hack who’s grudgingly dispatched to Pittsburgh to profile sweater-wearing Mr. Feelgood. One of the hack’s many problems is his estrangement from his alcoholic father. If you think you can guess where this is going, you’re absolutely right. It’s one of those films that will either leave you charmed or reaching for the sickbucket.
