Zheng Dasheng

A state-approved propaganda epic celebrating the centenary of the Chinese Communist Party, this was always going to be in safe hands given that director Zheng Dasheng‘s previous works have included the suitably brown-nosing, snappily titled The Founding of a Republic (2009), The Founding of a Party (2011), and The Founding of an Army (2017). It is, however, the first of his films to get a UK cinema release.

Despite this, and the close involvement of China’s ever-vigilant censors and state officials, Variety reports that the film has proven unpopular among ultra-nationalists, who reckon it is “overly commercial and disrespectful to the revolutionary heroes it depicts”. Incidentally, there doesn’t appear to be a UK trailer, but we’re assured 1921 is being screened with English subtitles.
