Not to be confused with horror movies sharing the title – though there’s no shortage of horror here – Oscar nominated Last Men in Aleppo director Feras Fayyad‘s latest documentary tells the powerful and extraordinary story of pediatrician and managing physician Dr. Amani Ballour and her colleagues, who risk their lives to run a subterranean hospital in Syria.

In addition to chronicling the challenging conditions in which these medics operate, the film is also a celebration of female solidarity in which women work as equals alongside their male counterparts, doing their jobs in a way that would be unthinkable in the oppressively patriarchal culture that exists above. It was the winner of the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival.
