Summer of Soul

Certificate

Running Time
117 mins

Everybody knows about the Woodstock Festival. But there was another music fest earlier in 1969, which took place just 100 miles south.

The Harlem Cultural Festival in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park) was a celebration of black music and fashion. It featured performances from the likes of Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone (the only artists to play both Woodstock and Harlem, fact fans), Gladys Knight & the Pips, Ray Baretto, Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach. The filmed footage was never seen and mostly forgotten until director Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson revisited it for this illuminating documentary.
