Veteran TV director Naoko Nobutomo‘s personal documentary struck such a chord in Japan that it became an unexpected box office hit. Shot over several years, it chronicles the enduring love, resilience and struggles of her nonagenarian parents in Kure, Hiroshima, as her mother’s Alzheimer’s-related dementia gradually worsens.
It’s on screen in the annual Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme, whose theme this year is happiness. Naoko Nobutomo will be present for a Q&A after the screening.
