Why oh why oh why? Alexander Mackendrick’s 1949 adaptation of Compton MacKenzie‘s novel is one of the quintessential Ealing comedies. So director Gillies MacKinnon must know he’s on to a hiding to nothing with this remake of the much-loved, fact-based yarn about a bunch of plucky Scottish islanders who defied petty authority to help themselves to a mountain of whisky from a shipwreck.

If you really fancy seeing James Cosmo in the role originally played by James Robertson Justice and Eddie Izzard taking Basil Radford’s part, dive right in.
