The More the Merrier

Director
George Stevens
Certificate

Running Time
104 mins

Set against the backdrop of the housing shortage in Washington DC during the first months of WWII, this screwball romp with a light social message has prim Jean Arthur reluctantly agreeing to take on businessman James Coburn as a boarder. But he then sublets his half of the apartment to handsome Joel McCrea.

Now restored in glorious 4K, this is an elegant ensemble comedy, for which Coburn won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor. Amusingly, the scene in which McCrea makes a path at Arthur on the steps of the apartment was considered scandalous back in 1943.

Author, critic and film historian Pamela Hutchinson introduces this UK premiere for Cinema Rediscovered.
