Running Time

Mary Pickford was a big star of the silent era and even co-founded two studios, one of them being United Artists (with Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin and D.W. Griffith). But there was a catch: audiences were only interested in seeing her as “the girl with the curls”. So here she is, at the age of 33, playing an impish 12-year-old tomboy who has to look after her little brother after their cop father is killed. It was a huge hit in 1925, which meant poor Mary had to remain in curls.

This Slapstick Festival screening is introduced by presenter and Pickford admirer Chris Serle. There’s also live musical accompaniment.
