No one would claim that Charlie Chaplin‘s penultimate movie, A King in New York, is his greatest work. But it is a fascinating if somewhat embittered satirical take on ’50s America.
Charlie plays the deposed monarch of Estrovia who finds himself at the mercy of the House Un-American Activities Committee after seeking sanctuary in the US. Fascinating fact: although set in New York, the film was shot entirely in the UK, using some rather unconvincing sets. This Slapstick Festival screening will be introduced by Chaplin biographer and critic, David Robinson.
