Broadcaster Chris Serle disinters one of the first slapstick duos of film history – Austria’s Cocl & Seff, played by Rudolf Walter and Josef Holub, who began performing together in 1913. Like Laurel & Hardy later, a core element of their comedy is the interplay between a chubby man who believes he’s the cleverer of the two and a thin one who seems more stupid. This Slapstick festival event includes some rare screenings of films supplied by Filmarchiv Austria, with musical accompaniment from John Sweeney (piano) and Elizabeth-Jane Baldry (harp).
