When third-rate club singer Whoopi Goldberg sees her nasty mafioso hubby Harvey Keitel wasting somebody she runs to the cops, who delightedly hide their star witness in a convent run by Mother Superior Maggie Smith. Here the formula plot kicks in as Whoopi takes charge of the choir of motley nuns, taking them out onto the streets to clear up the community, where Harvey’s contract killers track her down.

As a comedy, this hugely successful 1992 musical has one fatal flaw: it isn’t funny. Annoyingly, it also peddles the great big American lie that you can solve a load of inner city problems by singing gospel and Motown instead of boring old hymns and there’s no personal problem so severe that it can’t be cured with a little chat and some homespun philosophy. You may love it; you may lose your lunch.
