A rural schoolgirl is somewhat surprised to find herself waking up in the body of a teenage boy from Tokyo. He too is intrigued to find himself taking possession of a girl’s body, and is especially fascinated by the experience of having breasts. As they start to inhabit one another’s bodies on a regular basis, they initially assume they’re having particularly vivid dreams. But the truth turns out to be even stranger than anything they could have anticipated.
Hailed by many as the natural successor to Hayao Miyazaki, young Japanese animator Makato Shinkai‘s Your Name is his most intriguing, beautiful and emotionally complex film to date. It also became the first animated film ever to be selected for the London Film Festival’s official competition.
It’s back on sceen as part of a double-bill with a preview of his new film, Weathering With You. This one’s a romantic fantasy set in a rainy Tokyo, where a runaway schoolboy befriends an orphan girl who has the supernatural ability to manipulate the waether. It’s Japan’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film gong at the 2020 Oscars.
