Filmed in 1920, the very first screen version of this oft-remade swashbuckler is also the first action feature and the first film to be released by United Artists, which had been formed by star Douglas Fairbanks with chums Mary Pickford, D.W. Griffith and Charlie Chaplin. The film also established Fairbanks in his signature role as a sword-wielding action hero who makes ladies swoon (he returned to the masked avenger in 1925’s Don Q, Son of Zorro).
Lobster Films’ brand new restoration is presented by South West Silents with live piano accompaniment by Neil Brand. Nice to see it showing in the only local cinema that might have screened it on its original release too.
