Vesty avenger Bruce Willis’s first solo vanquishing of bad guys, with Alan Rickman on top form as ruthless, sadistic smoothie Hans Gruber. For good or ill, John McTiernan’s cracking action flick established the modern blockbuster template.

If this doesn’t seem like an especially appropriate choice for Bristol Film Festival‘s festive programme, bear in mind that all the action unfolds over Christmas.
