Ong-Bak meets Midnight Express as the gruelling true-life prison drama collides with the visceral pugilism flick. Johnny Mad Dog director Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire adapts Billy Moore‘s memoir, A Prayer Before Dawn: A Nightmare in Thailand, which recounts how this British junkie literally walloped his way out of a Thai prison hellhole.

Joe Cole, of Peaky Blinders fame, is cast as Moore, whose misdeeds land him a lengthy period of incarceration in Thailand’s notorious Bang Kwang central prison (aka the Bangkok Hilton). Fortunately, he finds he has a talent for Muay Thai boxing – aka kickboxing – which means he can win his freedom by pummelling fellow inmates to a pulp in a series of tournaments. Novel insights are at a premium here, but it’s all bone-crunchingly authentic. the Vue Cribbs screening on Mon 23 July is followed by a satellite boradcast of a conversation between Professor Green and the real-life Billy Moore.
