Workman dies after wall collapses

A man has died after part of a wall around a university halls of residence collapsed.

The tragic incident happened just before 1pm on Wednesday afternoon on Parry’s Lane in Stoke Bishop next to the University of Bristol’s Wills Hall on the edge of the Downs.

A large section of the wall collapsed onto the pavement at the top of Parry’s Lane where the road splits into two towards Saville Road.

Avon & Somerset Police were called to the scene by ambulance staff.

In a statement, police said: “The man sadly died while at work and we are therefore liaising with the Health & Safety Executive and together, are carrying out enquiries into the incident.

“His next of kin are aware and our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time.”

A University of Bristol spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with all those affected by the tragic incident that took place yesterday.

“We are liaising with the relevant authorities.”
