Tenth person jailed after racist violence
A man has been sentenced to three years in prison in connection with the racist violence that took place in Bristol city centre August 3.
John Matthews, 30, of Knowle has become the tenth person to be imprisoned after he pleaded guilty to violent disorder, theft and a Section 4 public order offence.
On Thursday, the presiding judge at Bristol Crown Court said Matthews “clearly does not have any respect for the courts, police or the law” after CCTV footage captured him hurling objects like glass bottles and cans at police officers and members of the public.

Police said that Matthews was also seen throwing punches and trying to break through police lines as part of what the judge called a “violent mob”.
Detective chief inspector, Clement Goodwin, said that Matthews’ behaviour on that day “was completely disgraceful”.
Goodwin said: “He showed an utter disregard for the safety of members of the public and police officers and I’m pleased that he has now received a lengthy prison sentence.
“We are continuing to investigate the shameful scenes we saw on that day and we will continue to make more arrests and charge those responsible to ensure they face justice.”
Ten people have now been sentenced after August 3, with a total of 41 arrested of which 28 have been charged.
