Prime Minister in Bristol for Tory EU elections campaign launch

By Ellie Pipe  Friday May 17, 2019

With less than a week to go before the EU elections, the Conservative Party launched their national campaign in Bristol in understated fashion.

Held in a small function room at Ashton Gate Stadium, prime minister Theresa May joined four candidates – including Claire Hiscott, a Tory councillor for Horfield – and a small handful of invited media representatives for the occasion.

No wide media invitations were issued – and none to local press. A Conservative party spokesperson said the event was “pooled” meaning just one representative from print and broadcast outlets were allowed in.

One of the only journalists in the room, Sky News political reporter Rob Powell, tweeted that he was allowed to ask only one question.

The Conservatives followed in the footsteps of Change UK – The Independent Party, who also launched their EU elections campaign in Bristol.

The event coincided with the news that talks between Labour and the Tories had collapsed as Brexit chaos continues.

Despite this, May insisted that a vote for the Conservatives is a vote for the party that can deliver Brexit and “for the party that will take this country forward to a brighter future”.

The EU elections take place on May 23.
