Love locks being removed from Pero’s Bridge
With bolt cutters in their hands and buckets by their feet, a pair of workers began removing the love locks from Pero’s Bridge on Monday morning.
One section of the bridge was already clear of the locks by 9am with the workmen methodically clearing the span of the locks which some love and others loathe.
The love locks are mostly left by couples who then throw the key into the water below.
is needed now More than ever
But for some, the image of a bridge named after a slave being covered with locks has long been unpalatable. The weight of the locks on the bridge had also prevented it from lifting.
The locks’ removal was due to take place before the Harbour Festival in July, with an estimated three tonnes of metal attached to the bridge.
