Heather Mack standing to be Green candidate for metro mayor

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Nov 5, 2024

The second most senior councillor at City Hall is the latest politician to throw her hat into the ring to become metro mayor.

Lockleaze councillor Heather Mack, currently deputy leader at Bristol City Council, hopes to be chosen by Green members to be her party’s official candidate.

The Greens’ other confirmed candidate is former mayoral challenger Mary Page, who helped lead the successful campaign to scrap the role of Bristol mayor.

The Conservative candidate for the elections in 2025 is another former mayoral candidate, Samuel Williams; former Bristol cabinet members Nicola Beech, Helen Godwin and Tom Renhard are battling for the Labour nomination; and the Lib Dems have yet to reveal their hand.

Before getting elected as a councillor, Mack worked for Oxfam and in sustainable food system work.

On her campaign website, Mack said: “My current position and my successful campaigning experience make me uniquely well placed to be our Green Party candidate for the West of England Combined Authority mayor.

“As deputy leader of Bristol City Council I hold one of the most significant Green roles within the region, I have sat on WECA committees and have worked closely with the current metro mayor.

“I also have extensive media experience and a track record of winning elections.

“My granddad was a farmer and I grew up in rural Devon on a council estate; I now represent a council estate within Bristol.

“I therefore have lived experience, or a strong understanding of, the most disenfranchised communities within the region.”
